Pink Nana

Jane: Two months ago, when we brought Daisy Dickens home, I wondered how I would feel about having a girl dog. You see, we've always had strapping young males who either liked to roam, or hump, or lift their leg and mark their territory. As silly as it sounds, owning a female pup seemed as unfamiliar to me as birthing a son (we had two precious girls).

So off I went to PetSmart before Daisy Delivery Day. I purchased a pink puppy Wubba for our newest WoofGang member. A girl's gotta have some bling, right? When we took Daisy home, I tenderly tucked her in my arms with a farewell gift from our breeders--a little pink blanket imbued with litter-mate scents.

That first night, when we trundled Daisy into her kennel in our bedroom, the pink blanket was in tow. But it--and another toy I'd warmed for comfort--did nothing to stop her crying. Yet as the days went by (and her crying decreased), I noticed Daisy developing a habit that made my heart melt. First thing each morning, when we let Daisy out of her kennel, she tenderly carried her pink blanket with her. Soon it seemed to follow her around the house.

My puppy has a blankie! I thought. And I remembered my little girls now grown, who long ago also were so attached to their "blankies." First Sarah, our eldest, with the satin-hemmed blanket her Nana gave her. We dubbed it Yellow Nana in her great-grandmother's honor. Sarah carried it everywhere while she sucked her thumb. Then Emily with her yellow receiving blanket nicknamed, simply enough, Blankie. Oh, I never dared to wash that ratty thing because then Emily could tell it smelled "different" (clean). It took months of bribes and wheedling to finally convince Emily to let go of her well-worn security talisman.

So now I have a yellow Lab puppy who loves her blankie. In honor of all the well-loved fabric that has preceded it, I've christened this blankie Pink Nana, much to my adult daughters' delight. They love it--and they totally get it. Me too.

Suddenly having a little girl dog isn't so strange after all.

Happy Mother's Day!

  1. It'll be interesting to read more about your insights on the differences between having a female puppy versus the usual pack of males. I totally get your Pink blankie, too. Enjoy your girlie girl dog and your boys, too!
    Have a happy Mother's Day...

  2. What a sweet baby girl! Congratulations. Just a warning, one of our only female dogs that we've had developed a habit of humping my sister. It was really funny, for me anyway.

And sorry that it's taken me a while to stop by, I've been busy with finals.

  4. A pink nana, how cute! DawgMom says she's mostly had females through the years, but loves her boys too, heck she loves all of us. :)

  5. I love the idea of a blankie for you baby girl... Our pets are our children. However, my little girl Jelly, she likes my socks???? I always know where to find them.... Backyard, under the couch, in the bed, under her toy box, and in the water bowl. .... She is always bringing toys to the water bowl and when she goes to drink she drops the toy right in the water takes a drink and then leaves the toy or sock for me.

    Love your blog.

  6. Hello Woofgang,
I have been thinking hard about whether Tiggy the Tiguan is a good doggy car. Daddy loves Tiggy but it is a bit high for me to jump in to. Also daddy had a hooooooooge sunroof put in and all round airbags so you can't fit one of those screen things in the boot. I quite like this cause it means I can jump over but Daddy says I have to tell you that that is bad! THere is no built in water holder or treat dispenser but mummys car (Mazda 2) doesn't have those either. It is a very smooth ride and here in Oz hardly anyone has a Tiggy so we look kinda cool driving around.
Daddy is shouting from the other room- he says I have to say that it is the best car ever!!
    Hope that helps,
    Liffey's Licks to yoyu all

  7. Wethinks there's a Tiggy in our future. As soon as they offer it with a pink nana holder, it's a done deal.

  9. I like this story a lot -- makes me want to come home and wrap myself with Yellow Nana. YN always made me feel better during a thunderstorm or a scary night alone at home! Now I have a husband to help with with both those things :) I love you guys so so much! Give a kiss to Boom a loom and Daisy Dukes for me!

  10. Happy Mothers day - I posted my dog post in honor of the award you gave me, thank you again.

Neither of my dogs or my kids wanted a blankie and actually my dogs use our blankets as their blankies as they both sleep on our bed.
